gMEMORIAL DAY PARADE BIGGEST IN BOROUGH HISTORY!

Bergen County Sheriff, Senator Sarlo and a host of bands and marchers make the day a true remembrance of the faithful departed!

Councilman Jim Ferriero & veteran George Lewis serve as honorary grand marshals, Massa gives stirring tribute to America's finest!

NORTH ARLINGTON - On a picture perfect day, North Arlington memorialized those who served this nation with great fanfare by organizing one of the largest parades in borough history.

With Councilman Al Granell heading the parade committee, more bands and more marchers participated than ever before as bands and bagpipes could be heard from blocks away as North Arlington paid homage to those who wear the uniform.

Bergen County Sheriff Leo Maguire not only marched and attended, but brought an array of equipment and manpower to honor America's military men and women. He was joined by Senator Paul Sarlo as well as Assemblyman Fred Scalera of Nutley and Assemblyman Gary Schaer of Passaic.

Granell, who served as master of ceremonies introduced Council President Steve Tanelli who introduced Mayor Peter Massa for some stirring remarks about the meaning of Memorial Day.

Massa, who is a retired NAPD sergeant talked about how the threat of terrorism and 9/11 happened just miles from where marchers and observers stood to honor America's best.

"We shall never forget and always remember the debt of gratitude we have for these heroes," said the first-term Democrat.

Outgoing Councilman James Ferriero and VFW activist George Lewis had the distinction of serving as co-honorary grand marshals.

Ferriero, who was elected to the council in 2002 and re-elected in 2005 was the oldest serving freshman in Bergen County at the time of his election. He is the first Democrat elected to consecutive three-year terms since 1980. A retired Lt. Colonel, Ferriero served in the European Theater during World War 2.

"This was a great day for people who gave so much to this country. I was honored to share the title of grand marshal with George. This was a great day for North Arlington," said the High Street homeowner.

In addition to the many bands, the North Arlington HS band along with the Middle School band also wowed the crowd.

"Our bands are very good and it was great to see them showcased," said school trustee Sharon Granell, the wife of Councilman Al Granell.
